Soap nuts are the fruit of the tree Sapindus. The soap nut, is a small fruit with 1-2 cm diameter, yellow ripening brownish containing a black seed. The skin of the shells contains 15% saponin which is similar to soap. Saponin is the active cleaning ingredient in Soap nuts, and it has a dermatologically sound lathering and cleansing effect. Inside the shells are saponin, which is known for its ability to cleanse and wash. Using soap nuts instead of chemical cleaning products in and around your house is better for you, your family and for the environment.
Warm to hot water brings out the cleansing agents in the Soap nuts, so we recommend using this method when starting with a warm/hot load of laundry. Each bag should last through approximately three loads.
Fill a small muslin bag (3 x 4) full of Soap nuts, and knot it closed. Put that bag inside another bag, knot down, and tie the second bag closed (washing machines have been known to break one bag open), and throw the soap nuts in the washing machine with your load of laundry. Reuse the same bag multiple times in hot, warm or cold loads. When using a cold water wash, pre-soak the nuts in hot water for the best success.
Sold by the ounce. We will send the nuts in a paper bag but if you need a muslin bag to use in the laundry, click here here to purchase.
